The archaeological team digging at the Colony of Avalon in Ferryland came across a rare find last week.

The team picked up a block of organic material from their latest dig site. They were amazed when it turned out to be a burnt woven mat with cordage around the edges. The mat was believed to have been burnt in a French attack on the colony back in 1696.
