When it comes to voter priorities this federal election, Canadians are split between action on climate change and investing in oil and gas.
But Angus Reid says the divide is not quite that black and white.
While the federal carbon tax is still very divisive among voters, Angus Reid says most people are seeking more action to meet the 2030 emission reduction goal.
Of those asked in its latest survey, 69 per cent of voters see climate change as the priority, while 58 per cent say oil and gas development must be considered alongside climate action.
Angus Reid says the split is not purely ‘environment versus economy.’ In fact, three quarters of those supporting climate action as a priority also wanted to see at least some investment in oil and gas.
On the other side, 80 per cent of those wanting a focus on oil and gas also wanted attention given to the environment.
The survey used a random sample of over 1,500 Canadians who are members of Angus Reid Forum, with an error margin of 2.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
