The damage caused by the storm is being assessed, with uprooted trees and damage to buildings and infrastructure being reported throughout the eastern half of the province.
Hitting just west of Long Harbour around 1:30 a.m., the storm made landfall, moving at 83 km/h as a Category 1 Hurricane.
Jeremy March, Meteorologist with the Canadian Hurricane Centre, says the further north, the stronger the winds.
He says it really picks up speed when it gets caught in the northern winds and is pushed out to sea quickly.
St. John’s International Airport reported gusts of up to 145 km/h, while the strongest gusts were reported from a private weather station in Cape St. Mary’s around midnight, clocking in at 182 km/h.
RNC Constable James Cadigan is urging people to stay home if safe to do so.

He says there is a fair amount of debris blowing around, and they are asking that people in the community remain off the roads at this time.
Ongoing power outages on the Avalon and Burin Peninsula are affecting around 50,000 customers.

Severe storm surge is being reported on the Burin Peninsula. Reports from the area suggest that the Town of Little Bay near Marystown has been evacuated due to the rising water.
