Ferry passengers on the Labrador coast will no longer be subject to searches of their luggage,
Torngat Mountains MHA Lela Evans complained last week after a passenger claimed that her luggage was searched by the crew without her permission and in full view of people in the area. The Kamutik was docked in Nain at the time and headed for points south. The woman in question had her four children with her.
Evans said it seemed like the search was done only because the woman was Indigenous.
Premier Dwight Ball says government has put a stop to the practice as it needs time to come up with a policy. He says he search was not authorized by the Department of Transportation and Works.
The Premier says there will be consultation with Nunatsiavut.
