Just over one week since Hurricane Larry caused widespread damage and power outages, Environment Canada is warning of another storm heading toward the Burin, Bonavista and Avalon peninsulas.
Beginning Sunday afternoon, Tropical Storm Odette, which formed a few hundred kilometres southeast of Long Island on the US eastern seaboard, is forecast to dump between 50 to 100 millimetres of rain from Sunday afternoon through to Monday morning, leading to the possibility of flash flooding in some areas.
Stephen Hott, a forecaster with the Canadian Hurricane Centre, says the speed of the storm is the key difference between Odette and Larry.
He says while it will be further offshore, Odette will slow down as it approaches the island, meaning the rain will last longer over land.
Wind warnings that had earlier been issued have since been cancelled.
