A local runner is making waves on the international marathon circuit.
Mary Anne Griffin of St. John’s recently ran the Berlin marathon, finishing third in the women’s 55-59 age group. A week later before she could fully recover, Griffin ran the London marathon, finishing only ten minutes slower than her previous time.
Due to her stellar performance, she is currently the top-ranked Canadian in her age group and sixth in the world by the Abbott Wanda Age Group Worlds.
Griffin started running in her forties as a way to stay healthy following a Celiac disease diagnosis. She ran her first marathon in 2013, and since then has completed five of the six races in the Abbott World Marathon Majors, with only the Tokyo marathon remaining.
Griffin says she’s proud to represent her province. She says she’s proud to stand out and is hoping that she can inspire others to continue standing out as they get older.
