The international film industry is still coming to grips with a tragic on-set death last week after a prop gun misfired. One member of the local film industry believes the death was completely preventable.
Last week, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on the set of the film “Rust,” after the film’s executive producer, Alec Baldwin, fired a prop gun that was believed to be safe.
Actor Liam Small, who has worked in the prop departments on sets, is also a former salesman in the firearm industry. He says that if the proper protocols are followed, then such deaths should never occur.
Generally speaking, he says such props should be in the hands of an armourer, someone who is designated with ensuring their safe use and transportation.
He says with the use of technology, such props should no longer be needed.
He says those sorts of things can be added in post-production and there’s no need “whatsoever” to have live guns on set in this day and age.
Small says he will not be watching “Rust” when it comes out, and instead encourages people to watch the other works of Halyna Hutchins.
