It didn’t take long for the SNC Lavalin scandal to be raised after Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s election campaign officially got underway in Ottawa yesterday.
The very first question fielded by the Liberal leader was about cabinet confidentiality and the police investigation.
He was asked by the Globe and Mail about why the Liberal government has refused to waive cabinet confidentiality so RCMP can investigate the case. He contends that the federal government has given out the “largest and most expansive waiver of cabinet confidence in Canada’s history.”
Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, who launched his campaign in Quebec in hopes of making inroads in that province, urged the Prime Minister to go further in waiving cabinet confidence to assist police. He even went as far as accusing Trudeau of deliberately hiding information from the public.
The rough day one for the Liberal campaign continued when Trudeau flew to Victoria, BC only to have the media bus drive into the plane on the tarmac, damaging the wing.
Meanwhile NDP Leader Jameet Singh launched his election campaign in London, Ontario moments after the writ was dropped.
Singh and the party has long campaigned for universal pharmacare, and is making it a key part of his election platform.
Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, buoyed by recent polls showing the Greens leading the NDP in popularity, gave a fiery election campaign speech to kick off their campaign.
She touched on human rights, social justice, universal pharmacare, child care, and free post-secondary tuition.
