The provincial government this morning unveiled a five-year renewable energy plan that supports its goal to transition to a greener landscape and net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Entitled Maximizing Our Renewable Future, the plan was developed with input from the public, Indigenous governments and organizations, industry and stakeholders.
It focuses on the four key areas of energy sources and markets, a regulatory framework, partnerships, innovation and industry support, as well as training and jobs.
The plan includes overviews and future hopes for those energy sources such as hydro, wind, biogas and solar power.
Energy Minister Andrew Parsons says he’s particularly interested in the potential for wind energy, once moratoriums on its development are lifted.
He says he’s very bullish with the onshore and offshore potential for harnessing that energy source, noting government will work with Hydro to assess the growing interest in the province’s seemingly unlimited supply.
The government has yet to put a price tag on implementing the plan, but has pledged to provide an update on its progress within one year.
Opposition Responds
Meanwhile, the Opposition says while it’s pleased the plan includes elements from the party’s Blue Book such as wind power, they are not fully convinced government is committed to the plan.
Shadow Minister Lloyd Parrot says the plan has no deliverable dates or dollars attached to the plan, so government’s commitment is yet to be seen.
