The lawyer for a Memorial University student is seeking an apology, along with answers to a series of questions related to restrictions placed on him while an investigation is carried out into his alleged behaviours.
Matt Barter has been temporarily banned from campus, except to attend class and exams.
Memorial University says a student is never banned from campus for protesting, but under the Code of Conduct, action can be taken when there is an escalation of certain behaviours deemed to be in violation.
Lawyer Kyle Rees recently wrote the Student Code of Conduct Officer for Memorial University, indicating that MUN made a serious mistake in imposing interim measures on his client.
He charges that the investigation, which he says will vindicate his client’s position, represents an attempt by the university to silence “one of the administration’s most vocal…critics.”
Rees is requesting the “immediate termination of the interim measures,” and that the university apologize to Barter for the interim sanctions against him.
