A demonstration is planned today outside the constituency office of Lake Melville MHA Perry Trimper.
A peaceful protest against racism and calling for the resignation of Trimper as MHA is planned at noon in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
The former minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment resigned Friday, just a week after taking over the portfolio. Organizers say they don’t believe that Trimper’s resignation is enough in light of comments he made after his phone failed to disconnect after leaving a message on the voice mail of Dominic Rich of the Innu Nation. Phrases like “God-given right” “race card” and “entitled” were used in the conversation.
A conversation between Trimper and an unnamed woman was inadvertently recorded with critical comments about the Innu that many consider to be racist.
The recording was made public on Thursday and Trimper resigned from cabinet the following day, just one week after being sworn-in as minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment.
Meeting Set for This Afternoon
Premier Dwight Ball is set to be in Labrador for a meeting with Innu Nation this afternoon to address concerns on their future relationship with Perry Trimper.
A spokesperson for Innu Nation says as of this morning, they are still in the dark on who the other individual in the recorded conversation with Perry Trimper was.
According to the Premier is not in an executive or managerial position with government, but Ball says he does not have a name at this stage.
Innu Nation will publicly comment on the situation after the meeting this afternoon.
