Music NL, a provincial organization that helps promote the local music industry, is in some serious financial trouble.
Interim Chair of the Music NL Board Amy House told VOCM Morning Show co-host, Fred Hutton, they are $200,000 dollars in the hole.
Looking back through the finances, there have been budget overruns on programming over the last six years, and “it doesn’t look like anybody had their eye on that ball.”
An interim board was formed following mass resignations earlier this year.
House says the music industry is a big economic driver in the province and Music NL is committed to helping musicians. She says the extent of the deficit came as a complete surprise to the interim board.
They’re still receiving invoices they weren’t expecting and aren’t listed in payables, but they’re up for the challenge.
House says there are no indications of any misconduct, and mismanagement appears to be behind the financial trouble.
