The decision by Public Health officials to keep daycares open even while schools are closed was made because schools are considered higher risk for COVID outbreaks.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says even though child care centres deal primarily with children too young to get vaccinated, schools bring together much larger groups of people in a variety of settings.
She says schools bring together large groups of people, and the potential for large outbreaks related to school communities is much higher.
