The latest modeling on COVID-19 in the province from Dr. Proton Rahman suggests that public health measures and vaccinations are doing what they intended to do.
Dr. Rahman released his team’s latest modelling at yesterday’s live COVID briefing.
He suggests that the province has reached a “plateau” when it comes to COVID cases in the Omicron wave.
He says those over the age of 50 are at the greatest risk of hospitalization, but vaccination rates in those age groups are “phenomenal” and that could explain why the province’s hospitalization rates are so low. However, that doesn’t mean the province couldn’t see another explosion in case numbers.
Rahman suggests that, with the current high number of cases and contacts, if public health measures are relaxed to where they were last summer, there is the potential for “exponential growth.”
He says at some point in time, the alert levels will have to be downgraded and Dr. Fitzgerald will figure that out accordingly. But, very little public health measures combined with high active case counts could result in exponential growth.
