The MUN Students Union is speaking out in support of students who are feeling uncomfortable with a return to in-person labs this semester due to the surge in COVID cases.
The university recently announced that in-person labs will be going ahead despite classes being online until at least January 31.
The union says students are “distraught” with the decision and are feeling that the University isn’t prioritizing their health and safety.
They say there are many students who are immunocompromised who are now having to make the choice between protecting their health and getting an education.
Hilary Hennessey, Executive Director of External Affairs, Communications, and Research with MUNSU says students who live in residence are also feeling the stress of having more people come on to campus.
She says those students are nervous about people congregating in large groups, noting that they have concerns about things such as dining hall—where they are concerned public health measures are not properly in place.
Hennessey explains that they’re concerned there will be a surge on campus if MUN decides to bring more students back on campus.
