St. Kevin’s Parish in the Goulds isn’t giving up the millions raised through Chase the Ace without a fight.
The finance committee banked almost $6 million from the wildly popular fundraiser in 2017.
The money was earmarked to operate the church, food bank and parish hall.
But now the Supreme Court must decide whether it can go toward settling sex abuse claims linked to the former Mount Cashel Orphanage instead.
Kyle Rees, who represents the parish in the matter, says it’s not so much who owns the money, but what it can be used for.
He says the Criminal Code stipulates the funds must be used for the purpose they were raised, which was for the parish, not the settling of abuse claims.
Rees says the Church is remaining neutral on the issue, with lawyers for the sex abuse victims arguing the money should go into the larger pot to settle claims.
Arguments in the case are scheduled to be heard on February 28.
Meanwhile, the Archdiocese of St. John’s has been granted another 45 days to finalize its proposal to satisfy creditors and claimants.
In total, more than 100 men are seeking about $50 million in compensation for abuse at the former Mount Cashel Orphanage.
The Church is looking to sell off properties throughout the region to come up with money, including the Basilica of St. John the Baptist.
