There’s a proposal to develop a waste to energy plant in Lewisporte that would convert biomass and plastic waste into renewable energy but some residents who are against the idea have started an online petition.
The proposal, by Synergy World Power, is currently at the environmental assessment stage.
Anne Sheldon, a co-founder of “Say No To American Garbage,” says the province is not taking care of its own garbage properly and is in no position to take on garbage from another country. She doesn’t think it’s worth risking significant environmental damage for the sake of a few jobs.
Sheldon says the natural beauty and cleanliness of our province should come first.
She’s worried that, 20 years down the road, central Newfoundland will become a drive-thru that people go through to get to the other side of the island.
