A consortium of antic-racist advocacy groups is calling on government to revise the curriculum in the K-12 school system to reflect a commitment to an anti-racism framework.
The coalition is specifically concerned with an assignment titled “How Many Immigrants Should Canada accept?”
The Anti-Racism Coalition (ARC-NL) have several recommendations including that a committee of racialized consultants be hired to do a comprehensive review of the curriculum, current and future educators be given specialized training, and that educators with demonstrated experience in anti-racist teaching be hired.
Maria Dussan of ARC-NL’s Healthcare for All Campaign says we need to act now to begin remediating the profound impact that years of racist teachings have had on migrant, refugee, black and other racialized communities in our province.
The coalition has started on online petition.
