The Atlantic Canadian Trucking Association is adding its voice to calls denouncing the trucking convoy headed for Ottawa in protest of the federal government’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for cross-border truckers.
The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) says they do not support and strongly disapprove of any protests on public roadways, highways, and bridges, as the vast majority of the Canadian trucking industry is vaccinated.
Jean-Marc Picard, executive director of the Atlantic Canadian Trucking Association, says they don’t support it either, and are taking the same position, strongly disapproving.
He says the convoy won’t change anything as the mandate is already in place. Picard says truck drivers have to move forward and get vaccinated, or they will have problems at the border.
Picard suggests there are different channels and avenues to take to express personal opinion, and if anything, the protest will only disrupt the supply chain.
As to the extent of the impact, Picard explains that it really depends on how many drivers participate.
He says the industry is busy and they need all the people they can get to move goods. Any driver who is not working and is part of the convoy will create disruptions in some way says Picard—although he doesn’t expect numbers to be “huge.”
