Beekeepers are less than enthused with new regulations introduced in Portugal Cove St. Philips that require a permit to keep bees.
The president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Beekeeping Association, Catherine Dempsey, told VOCM Morning Show co-host Gerri Lynn Mackey the regulations, which were implemented without consultation, don’t make sense.
You can only have one hive, and it has to be 13 metres, or 40 feet, from your property line.
That, she says, is unrealistic. Dempsey says even limiting beekeepers to a single hive defies the purpose.
Dempsey encourages beekeepers to have two hives, so that if one hive fails, the other hive is there to help.
