About 60 per cent of deaths in the province during the Omicron outbreak have been in people who were either partially or fully vaccinated.
That’s according to Health Minister John Haggie, who was referencing the latest modeling data on the last group of deaths likely related to Omicron.
This is the first time vaccination data has been released specifically about COVID-related deaths. The province’s COVID hub does have some information, but deaths are grouped in with hospitalizations.
Right now, nearly 94 per cent of those aged 12 and above in Newfoundland and Labrador are fully vaccinated.
Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says over half of deaths being in vaccinated people does not shake her faith in the efficacy of vaccines.
She cautions against people looking at numbers without taking a deeper dive into them. She says there will be deaths in both the vaccinated and unvaccinated, but what is known is that the risk of ending up in hospital greatly increases if unvaccinated.
