Newfoundland and Labrador’s Chief Medical Officer is providing some insight into how cases at the Voisey’s Bay mine are being reported.
Sources tell VOCM that dozens of cases have been reported, but there’s no official confirmation on any numbers.
When contacted about the situation, Vale would only say that they report all cases to public health, and that they are monitoring the situation closely with numerous measures in place.
While Dr. Janice Fitzgerald could not talk specifically about Voisey’s Bay, she did give a general account of how cases are reported to the public.
She says cases are reported by where someone resides. For example, if someone lives in Central but works elsewhere, that person would be reported as a central case.
She says staff at Labrador-Grenfell health communicate with Voisey’s Bay and provide advice, but she can’t speak to specific case counts as she doesn’t have that level of detail.
