The Archdiocese of St. John’s is beginning to close churches to help pay out millions of dollars in sex abuse claims.
Holy Family Parish in Paradise got the bad news yesterday that their church is closing next week.
The statement from Archbishop Peter Hundt says it could be temporary, but with about $50 million in abuse claims to settle, it’s likely the beginning of the end for that parish and others as the sell-off gets real.
When the Church filed for creditor protection in December, it pooled all funds from all parishes and gave each a share to operate, in addition to their own collection plates and fund-raising.
Parishes were given 45 days to make a go of it, but the ones that couldn’t would see closures. It’s not clear if other parishes got the same news yesterday, or the fate of schools on those properties.
At least one parish is pushing back against the move in court. St. Kevin’s in the Goulds is trying to protect more than $5 million they raised from their Chase the Ace fundraiser four years ago.
As for Holy Family, parishioners are expected to practice their faith with neighbouring congregations.
The Church itself will close on February 7, giving them one final Sunday mass in the building.
