The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay has agreed to stop using and disclosing personal information collected through the use of body cams.
The town has a body worn camera policy and program that allows municipal officers to wear the devices. That policy prompted Privacy Commissioner Michael Harvey to reach out to learn more about the policy, eventually launching an investigation into the program.
In May the Privacy Commissioner determined that the town’s body cam program should be scrapped because it could not implement a program that was compliant with the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
On January 17, Justice Sandra Chaytor signed a Consent Order, jointly agreed to by the town and the Privacy Commissioner, confirming that the town has agreed to stop using body cams.
