A researcher at Memorial University is gathering information about the results of the rapid antigen tests completed by K-12 students ahead of the return to school.
The program is being lead by Associate Professor Amy Hurford. She explains that the survey is very short and consists of four questions, two of which ask for some information on the person’s location, and the final two ask for the results of the tests.
Hurford says there are two purposes for the survey. The first is to help the public understand the results of the testing. The second purpose is to inform research about the virus.
She says one thing that will help inform reopening plans is understanding how much immunity there is in the community, which includes both vaccine-derived immunity and immunity derived from infection.
Infection-derived immunity is the piece that is hard for researchers to get their hands at right now because it’s hard to know how many people are actually infected.
But, Hurford says, that is important information in determining how safe it is to reopen.
The results of the survey will be released one week from today.
