The country’s premiers came out of a virtual meeting on Friday calling on Ottawa for urgent action to address health care. But it’s not just the premiers who say urgent action is need.
The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions held a Facebook live event on Friday calling attention to staffing shortages, burnout and what they call a persistent lack of strategic planning, leading to a crisis in the health care system.
Registered Nurses Union President Yvette Coffey says while the provincial government has started to address the issue, more action is needed.
Last fall the province announced the creation of a new office for the retention and recruitment of health care professionals, but Coffey says the situation is critical with the provinces competing with each other for resources.
NLMA President Dr. Susan MacDonald says it’s not enough to simply put more money into the system.
Money is just one piece of the puzzle says MacDonald and where it comes from, she doesn’t care, as long as it improves the delivery of health care and access to health care for patients.
