As predicted, the price of gas has surpassed the $1.70 a litre mark in the metro area this morning.
Gas has risen by another 4.5 cents and diesel is up 4.4 cents.
Furnace oil saw the biggest bump — a whopping 6.55 cents a litre.
Stove oil on the island and in Labrador, as well as propane, all increased by an average of 4 cents a litre.
The record numbers are prompting the PC Opposition to again call on government to intervene.
Tory finance critic Tony Wakeham says it all comes down to choices, and the poor ones made of late.
He noted the government spent thousands on furniture for the Colonial Building, $5 million on an assessment of its assets, and opened a new premier’s office in central Newfoundland.
Yet, he says, they won’t put some of its recent reaping of oil royalties toward reducing fuel costs for people in the province.
Wakeham is calling on government to make emergency adjustments now, instead of waiting until budget time.
Stove oil on the island is increasing by just under 4.6, with that increase almost a cent less in Labrador at 3.54.
Propane is increasing by just under 4 cents.
