Premier Andrew Furey has reached out to the Spanish Ambassador to pass along condolences on behalf of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador on the sinking of the fishing trawler the Villa de Pitanxo.
Twenty-four crew members from countries including Spain, Peru and Ghana, were on board the vessel when it sank in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
Ten bodies were recovered yesterday from the scene of the tragedy on the Grand Banks—approximately 250 nautical miles east of St. John’s—while three survivors were rescued from a life raft.
Premier Furey told Spanish Ambassador Alfredo Martinez that, like the people of Spain, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have an historic attachment to the sea, and are all too familiar with the toll living off the ocean can bring.
Regrettably, JRCC Hfx can confirm that an additional 3 deceased individuals have been recovered from the sunken fishing vessel. Our thoughts go out to all the families of this crew.
