“A tough pill to swallow.”
That’s how Jerry Williams, Head Coach of the Newfoundland Rogues describes the disappointing end to the club’s inaugural season in St. John’s, cut short after just six games thanks to the Omicron outbreak.
Williams says this was the second time in his coaching career that COVID has forced a season to end early. The same happened in 2020, just before the playoffs. He says telling the players their season is over “doesn’t get any easier.”
The Rogues had tried to move their season south of the border in an effort to salvage it. Williams says while it was close to happening, ultimately the change didn’t come together.
The bench boss says he keeps in daily contact with his players, staying positive and appreciating what they were able to do together on the court.
He says he isn’t turning his back on players just because they aren’t playing right now. Whether it’s with the Rogues or not, his players have proven how good they are. He says people are talking about the Rogues all over the world.

As for next season, Williams says the goal remains the same – championship or bust. He says the team feels they owe the province that much, especially given the way last season ended.
Not only that, but Williams promises fans an even better team, saying his phone has been ringing off the hook with agents trying to get their players roster spots.
He promises the fans big things next season, saying the best is yet to come.
Williams says once they return to the court, there’s going to be plenty of exciting basketball, complete with three pointers and slam dunks. “We gave you a taste, now we’re going to give you the full course.”
