Provincial officials walked away from a recent meeting with the federal fisheries minister feeling positive about her vision for the industry.
Minister Joyce Murray recently came under fire from the FFAW about comments they say she made about the fishery during an event.
The response prompted Premier Andrew Furey and provincial Minister Derrick Bragg to schedule a meeting with Murray to find out more about the context of what she said.
Bragg says the meeting went great, noting that Murray discussed her mandate letter, which talks about conservation.
He says he understands that because of what the province went through with the moratorium in the 1990s, and nobody wants to go through that again.
Bragg says Murray is very supportive of the province’s fishery, and he has confidence in the direction the feds want to take going forward.
He says they all agreed on the call that the fishery has a bright future, but they want to make sure it is there for years to come. Bragg feels that the minister has a better understanding of the provincial fishery following the call.
