It’s been a roller coaster of a winter thus far on the island, as every time a bit of snow has fallen, a warm-up hasn’t been far behind, leaving snowmobilers on most of the island with a disappointing season.
Peter Troke is president of The Discovery Trails Snowmobile Association and director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Snowmobile Federation.
He says this has been a “different” kind of winter.
He says it isn’t unusual to see winters without a lot of snow, but when it comes to cooling and warming cycles this winter is “award-winning for sure.”
That doesn’t mean that the entirety of the island is without the white stuff, however.
As Troke points out, to get in some snowmobiling right now it’s best to head west and north.
He says the best place to snowmobile is from Deer Lake up the Northern Peninsula.
He says St. Anthony has more snow now than it has over the last 3 years.
