The provincial immigration minister says the province has reached out to federal officials indicating that Newfoundland and Labrador’s doors are open to Ukrainians who want to move out of the war-torn nation or those who have already been displaced by the Russian invasion.
Gerry Byrne says the federal government takes the lead on refugee resettlement efforts, deciding how many people the country can accept.
He says an immigration officer has been assigned to support the 1,400 or so Ukrainians already living here bring loved ones to Newfoundland and Labrador.
Byrne is encouraging those who have reached out and others who want to help to donate money to the Red Cross to help with logistics.
He says Ukrainian and Canadian Red Cross organizations are the best route to go to ensure that the help that’s needed gets to the people who need it most.
Byrne is encouraging those with family members and relatives in Ukraine looking for safe haven to connect with the new Ukrainian Family Support Desk.
The initiative is being staffed by the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism.
Staff provide services including:
– Assisting individuals with family reunification and sponsorship through referrals to federal pathways;
– Directing Ukrainians who wish to work in the province to employment opportunities; and,
– Connecting with employers who wish to offer employment opportunities to Ukrainians.
The Support Desk can be reached via email at ukrainianfamily@gov.nl.ca.
