A lawyer for victims at the shooting inquiry in Nova Scotia says he’s troubled by efforts to gloss over facts that are embarrassing for the RCMP.
Mike Scott is representing relatives of some of the 22 victims at the Mass Casualty Commission.
It has heard that police waited more than 10 hours before telling the public that the shooter was disguised as a Mountie in a police cruiser. And when they did share the information, it was on their Twitter feed, rather than the emergency alert system.
Scott tells VOCM News the cold-hearted nature of the murders is unlike anything he’s ever seen. He says any one of them individually would compete with the worst case of one’s career, adding the killings in this case were “so pitiless.”
Yesterday, a lawyer for the police union argued the RCMP officers shouldn’t have to give live testimony at the inquiry, saying it could further traumatize them.
Lawyers like Scott say police have a very difficult job, which requires testifying in tough cases.
The inquiry’s interim report is expected in May, with the final report due by November.
