The Roman Catholic Diocese of St. John’s is trying to allay concerns and answer questions regarding the possible sale of parish cemeteries and a list of church properties for sale.
Archbishop Peter Hundt provided an update on the weekend. He says Holy Family in Paradise and St. Edward’s In Kelligrews do not have the financial resources necessary to continue operation and have been closed, at least temporarily. Pastoral ministry is being provided through neighbouring parishes.
Last week the court approved a sale by tender for major church properties in the St. John’s region including the Basilica and some cemeteries.
Some parish councils are contemplating proposals for the “repurchase” of certain church buildings and properties, while the Archdiocese is working with the Catholic Cemeteries Committee in considering a tender proposal for the “repurchase” of cemetery properties.
