St. John’s International Airport got a boost this morning to assist with its recovery from the crippling blow inflicted by the pandemic.
The roughly $22.5 million in federal money will go toward critical upgrades that were a challenge to carry out as revenues disappeared over the last two years.
The new cash will be spent on re-paving runways, as well as improving lighting, signage and drainage systems.

It will also help replace larger vehicles for the airport such as fire-rescue trucks, runway snowplows and ice sweepers.
The funding is in addition to $3.6 million from Transport Canada’s Airport Relief Fund which helped maintain stable operations and essential travel during the height of the pandemic.
Airport CEO Peter Avery says it’s an immense boost for critical projects and new assets, allowing staff to focus on a return to increased air service to and from the province.
