A new Abacus Data survey released today, International Women’s Day, shows that 85 per cent of Canadians who were asked say having more women in politics would have a positive impact on government policy, actions and decisions.
Equal Voice says the results show that one in five women say they would actively consider being a candidate, with the biggest perceived barrier being not having enough information regarding how to go about running for public office.
The poll also shows that women are being approached to run for office half as often as men; 7 per cent vs 14 per cent.
Equal Voice says not only are women not being approached, or not feeling as though they are qualified to run, but many don’t think that the work-life balance for elected officials is good.
Others are concerned about potential harassment they would face as candidates and elected officials, according to Eleanor Fast, the executive director of Equal Voice.
The Abacus Data survey is available online.
