As travel begins to ramp up again as the country comes out of the pandemic, one of the sectors looking for a strong restart is the cruise industry.
Federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra recently announced their measures for the cruise ship industry moving forward. That includes vaccination requirements for travelers and crew members, testing, and reporting.
But a cruise ship expert wonders how the rules will be enforced, because, up to now they haven’t been.
The minister says the new rules were well-received by those in the sector.
Alghabra says they have been working with the industry, and they too want to restore confidence in the sector. He notes that many stakeholders are predicting one of the busiest seasons ever.
Ross Klein says he would also like to hear about what the federal government will do if a cruise ship which has an outbreak requests permission to dock in a Canadian port.
He wonders what mechanism they are going to use to ensure that what needs to happen is being done. He says it seems every time there’s an outbreak, they learn that not all crew are vaccinated.
