SIRT-NL has determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe that a retired police officer committed a sexual offence against his stepson as alleged and no charges will be laid.
The investigation was launched following a complaint made against a retired RNC officer by his stepson.
The RNC received a complaint in October of 2021 and notified the Serious Incident Response Team, which was formed to provide civilian oversight into serious incidents involving police officers. SIRT’s investigation was launched in October and concluded late last month.
The allegation involved sudden and fleeting contact, and the affected person admitted that he does not know if that contact was by accident or because he moved toward the subject at the time. The SIRT investigation found that the affected person had denied telling the RNC that contact had occurred.
The SIRT investigation found there was animosity between the affected person and the retired officer and that the allegation arose the day after the two had a serious argument. SIRT concluded that the allegation was vague and contained internal discrepancies, and that there are no reasonable grounds to believe the subject officer committed a sexual offence.
