The City of St. John’s is boasting great success with its push to get more people recycling, and that has kickstarted a conversation about increasing the frequency of collection.
The city has noticed an increase of 30 to 40 per cent in recyclable material collected in January and February, ever since the clear garbage bag rules came into effect.
Deputy Manager of Public Works, LynnAnn Winsor, says council has asked her department to look into the possibility of doing weekly recycling, but that would require some significant changes.
She says it would require doubling of the fleet and double the staff, and “wouldn’t come with a low price tag.”
Winsor says the city is also looking at providing recycling bins to help deal with some other issues they’ve seen, such as with wind.
She says city staff will bring the findings on both ideas to a future committee of the whole meeting.
