Marijuana and alcohol were the most common substances leading to hospitalization of youth aged 10 to 24 across the country between April 2017 and March 2018 but but it is less of a problem in this province according to the statistics.
The report by the Canadian Institute for Health Information highlights the prevalence of mental-health conditions as contributing factors.
The institute says more than 23,000 people in that age group were hospitalized for harm caused by substance use, amounting to an average of 65 hospitalizations every day.
Jeff Hynes, a spokesman for CIHI, says while rates in this provincial for hospitalization due to cannabis and alcohol abuse are lower than the rest of the country, it’s just the opposite when it comes to depressants.
