One of the province’s rising hockey stars is taking her newfound fame all in stride.
Abby Newhook of St. John’s has been tearing up the ice in the first season of her university hockey career.
Newhook plays forward for Boston College.
She was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Year and has received numerous Rookie of the Week and month honours.
The 18-year-old says the accolades and recognition have helped her develop and grow as a player, rather than becoming a distraction.
She credits her teammates as well for pushing her to play even better.
Newhook has her sites set on even greater things, having cheered on Team Canada’s gold medal-winning game in Beijing.
She says her overall goal is to wear the maple leaf.
Newhook is part of a local hockey dynasty.
Her brother Alex plays for the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL.
