The PCs are raising concerns about the effects of a federal Liberal-NDP partnership on the Bay du Nord project.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the arrangement at a news conference Tuesday morning.
Interim PC Leader David Brazil says people should be concerned now more than ever about the future of Bay du Nord now that this partnership has been announced.
He says the 40-day delay for a decision on the project was put in place for a reason, and questions what’s been going on behind the scenes.
Brazil is skeptical that there may have been negotiations and hidden agendas behind the scenes due to the NDP’s environmental stance.
He is calling on the provincial government to lobby its federal counterparts to ensure the project gets the green light and is judged on its merits and value to the province, country, and world.
Meanwhile, the CEO of Energy NL, formerly Noia, says she remains confident in the federal government’s environmental assessment process.
Charlene Johnson says the impact assessment agency’s review found that the project won’t have adverse impacts as long as the proper mitigations are in place, of which they listed over 100.
She’s confident that Bay du Nord has an opportunity to set an example, not only for Canada but for the world.
She says as long as demand is there, then the product should come from a place that has the “laser sharp focus” on the environment, safety, and sustainability that this province has.
