Prime Minister Justin Trudeau isn’t the only candidate in the federal election who has been involved in a black or brownface controversy.
Greg Malone, the Green Party candidate in the riding of Avalon was also part of a similar controversy last year when he appeared in a television skit in which one of the characters appeared in blackface.
Malone admits to portraying Mahatma Ghandi on CODCO back in the 1980s and says it wasn’t part of the public conversation at the time.
Questions were raised in Parliament however about the Canadian taxpayer subsidizing what was considered subversive material, but it was focused on religious and sexual matters.
He says it would never be done now, because there wasn’t the sensitivity and understanding of the history at the time.
Malone says in the end, he doesn’t believe Justin Trudeau is racist.
He says we have allow people time to grow. There are biases and assumptions that people may have that come out over time and allow people to re-examine their opinions on issues.
