A member of Newfoundland and Labrador’s team in Warsaw is detailing what it’s like to be conducting their work in the country.
Sonia Parker is originally from Poland and has been to Warsaw many times.
However, she says it is “surreal” to be in the city now and describes it as being very different.
She says when they walk on the streets they hear both languages – Ukrainian and Polish, and see people lining up for supplies such as clothing and food.
She describes people lining up at the visa office and the Canadian embassy at midnight, waiting for the offices to reopen the next morning.
She says they have seen a lot of interest from people in coming to the province, noting that everyone has been very open to hearing what they have to say.
The tricky part of the situation, she says, is that they are dealing with people who are being asked to start their lives over – which is not easy.
She says they are speaking with many people who wish to stay as close to Ukraine as possible because they prefer to be near their family who are still in the country.
But, they are seeing a lot of people willing to move to Canada.
