The Placentia Area Historical Society celebrated a significant milestone this past weekend.
March 27 marked the 50th anniversary of the society, which strives to promote the study, knowledge and preservation of history in the Placentia area.
The society itself is a descendant of the Ancient Capital Historic Committee, which is believed to be the second historical committee set up in Newfoundland.
Today, the society has roughly 30 members, and shows no signs of slowing down. The organization’s activities this year revolve around converting the recently-acquired former St. Luke’s Anglican Church into a performance centre and museum.
The museum will highlight the history of the church, while the performance centre will become a tourist attraction. Events planned include an escape room game based on Placentia’s history, called “Placentia Plunder,” as well as musical performances.
