A Newfoundland and Labrador MP is not disclosing his position on Bay du Nord.
The Minister of Labour and the member for St. John’s South-Mount Pearl, Seamus O’Regan, says he cannot disclose cabinet discussions on Bay du Nord, but the ultimate decision lies with the Environment Minister.
O’Regan says he believes this week will be a very important one as the federal government is set to drop its Emissions Reduction Plan.
He says that plan will have detailed numbers, whether it’s smaller, accumulative numbers like those emitted from cars, or larger-scale projects. He says the report will cause us to reflect on projects like Holyrood and Come By Chance that emit significantly more than Bay du Nord.
O’Regan says now they’re looking at how to keep skilled workers from the province in the industry to effectively lower emissions.
He says they can’t just wave a wand and say “we’re going to have a just transition.” He says it may take up $4 trillion dollars in investment to get the country to net zero.
