The Avondale Fire Department has been left without a pumper after their old truck failed inspection.
Fire Chief Chad Costello says the truck was purchased in 2012 after being taken out of service by the St. John’s Regional Fire Department.
Chief Costello says they’ve had multiple issues with the truck, but this year rust and corrosion on the chassis signaled the end.
While the truck is out of service, they have systems in place in case of an emergency.
They have placed the Harbour Main Fire Department on their fire pager system as they have a functional pumper if a large-scale fire breaks out. The department also has a 2,000-gallon water tanker and a rescue unit, so they are not completely left without fire services.
He says they’re working with the province and their MHA, as well as Fire Community Services on next steps.
