It may be another while before the Rothschild report into the review of provincial government assets is delivered to government.
The province is spending $5 million on a review of public assets like the Liquor Corporation, Marble Mountain and oil and gas holdings. The intent is to see what “opportunities” those assets might represent as government finds ways to address its serious fiscal situation.
Finance Minister Siobhan Coady is not setting any deadlines.
She has not received it, but expects the report in the “days or weeks ahead.”
Corner Brook Mayor on Marble Mountain’s Future
The Mayor of Corner Brook believes Marble Mountain has a vital role to play in the west coast region for years to come, and that more can be done to exploit the attraction’s potential.
Marble Mountain is among the government assets under review by Rothschild and Company, the results of which were due by the end of this month.
Marble Mountain is subsidized by the provincial government to the tune of about $1 million per year.
Corner Brook Mayor Jim Parsons says Marble had a great season, despite some challenges, and it will continue to be a vital asset in the region. He says the city spends more on the local Civic Centre than government spends on Marble Mountain and he suggests there are opportunities for year-round adventure tourism at the site whether it’s privatized or not.
He says if done right, Marble can explore options like mountain biking, ATV tourism and making the mountain a four season resort.
