Energy NL is pleased that lower carbon oil was referenced by the Prime Minister during the release of the federal government’s 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan, as well as throughout the plan.
Charlene Johnson, President of Energy NL, says while there is consultation to come with industry, she believes it to be a signal that the oil offshore Newfoundland and Labrador will have a role to play. Johnson says when combined with the potential for wind, hydrogen and carbon capture, utilization and storage, the province will be at the forefront of the energy evolution.
She argues that getting to net-zero emissions by 2050, as outlined by the report, does not mean zero oil or gas, “at least not for the foreseeable future.”
Johnson calls the federal government’s plan ambitious, but says members of Energy NL will be valuable contributors to the global energy mix.
