Provincial Fisheries Minister Derek Bragg says a solution needs to be found for an exploding seal population off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The FFAW has launched a campaign in hopes of addressing herds that number in the millions.
The seal fishery opens on Friday, April 8th, while the crab fishery gets underway April 4th in some areas and a little later in April in others.
Bragg says timing of the seal fishery is another aspect that needs to be addressed.
He says not only do markets need to be found, but something has to be done about the timing of the seal fishery. Bragg says harvesters are preparing for the crab fishery and few harvesters will be available to prosecute the seal fishery.
